Sylvan Learning Offers Fun Educational Summer Camps

Sylvan_LearningSylvan Academic and Enrichment Summer Camps are available in a full day and half day format, for children aged 7-11, in a small group setting. They are led by certified teachers and have a maximum 8:1 ratio. They also have a separate Sylvan Junior Readers Camp for children ages 4-6 years which focuses on improving core reading and writing skills in a maximum 6:1 ratio.

The Sylvan camps adopt a Stealth Learning approach, so while the children are always having fun, they are also thinking creatively as they apply existing core academic skills and learn new ones every day. The camps are built around fun weekly themes, and each day will have elements of Science, Technology, English and Math along with interactive activities and games. Check out the diverse range of camp themes, which are described below.

Camp Themes

Sylvan Junior Readers (July 4th – September 2nd in Oakville)

Sylvan Junior Readers is an early literacy enrichment program, designed and led by Ontario Certified teachers in a maximum 6:1 ratio.  Specifically created for children aged 4-6, these half day camps focus on strengthening core reading and early writing skills in a fun and engaging manner.  The program is highly interactive and adaptive to student needs.

Earth and the Environment (August 2nd – August 5th in Oakville)

The earth is our home and children intuitively feel a close connection to it and are curious to learn more about it. Eco-campers will enjoy working together to create weather systems and will examine the beauty and power of nature. Through exploration, discussion and experimentation they will learn the importance of balance in the natural world and they will examine ways to protect it. They will also be challenged to suggest creative ideas to re-use and recycle every day items for function and fun!

Exploring Ancient Worlds (August 8th – August 12th in Oakville)

Curious campers will be going back in time to revisit and recreate some of the world’s most famous cultures, architectural structures and iconic artifacts. They will study how our ancestors might have acquired and then applied these academic skills and knowledge to build their civilizations. Campers will use traditional techniques and modern technological learning tools to examine, test and report their findings.

Brain Game Olympics (August 15th – August 19th in Oakville)

In August, we will all be hit with Olympic fever, as the 2016 games begin in Rio and we know your children will get caught up in the excitement. To celebrate Sylvan Learning has created their own ‘Brain Game’ Olympics. Every day campers will compete in teams using Lego Robotics, WeDo and Tynker Coding software. Which team will get their robot to jump the highest? Which design can be programmed to make the most noise? Campers will also exercise their brains by playing traditional strategy games and activities all week long.

News and Clues (August 22nd – 26th in Oakville)

Camp detectives will come in on Monday to the scene of a crime! They will investigate and then write reports about what they have discovered. This week will have young detectives practicing research skills, math concepts and writing reports – all with a fun twist! Campers will use modern technological learning tools and traditional techniques to examine, test and report their findings.

Fantastical Fiction (August 29th – September 2nd in Oakville)

What child doesn’t love the world of Harry Potter and magic? In this week, campers will be making “potions” and other magical items to take home with them. This week will be spent exploring how magic meets science. Campers will also be looking at popular fiction and connecting their creations to what they have read and seen in the fantasy world.

The price of the camps range from $188 – $345 per week. Visit Sylvan’s website, which is linked at the beginning of this post, for more information on costs and to learn how to enroll.
